Just a second ago, I saw a pitch for a local news broadcast story asking if it is worth your life to fight fire.
I say no. Fuck no.
I can only speak for myself, but I’ve seen plenty of of exhilarating fires. But it’s just a job. Let me repeat: it’s just a job.
And most of the time, it is a dead end job. Without a degree, firefighters at Oregon Department of Forestry can only hope to make as much as $16.25 an hour. While 40 hours are guaranteed, the overtime that makes the job so attractive is variable at best. Sometimes, it’s lucrative. But most of the time, it’s unreliable.
There is so much more to life than just going to a 9-whenever job. Firefighting can be exciting. But it’s never worth doing something stupid just for a bit of exhilaration.
